DS4 is 6 months!

I am so proud and happy to see my baby sitting up today. He's been trying for the past three weeks and today he did it. He sat up, back up straight, examining his hands just like a squirrel holding a nut. It's such a beautiful site. I want to remember that forever.

I tried to remember all my other kids when they're same age and my memory is fuzzy. How can it be fuzzy, it's not even 9 years since my first born is 6 months, and here I am with my fuzzy memory. My pictures aren't all digitized yet, so I flipped through my albums and saw and remember.

Here he is again, trying to sit up. I just realized that in my excitement, I forgot to take a snapshot of the straight up pose.

Sneeze and snort Tylenol

Did I ever tell you that I have a degree in Biochemistry? Have I also mentioned that I studied to be a medical doctor at one point in my life? I also had two years of studying to be a nurse way back when. Why am I asking?

I am 33, well-educated, yet I still believe that going to bed in a really cold house with my head exposed to that cold vent is the sole reason why I woke up two days ago with a runny nose, dry mouth, stuffy head, cough-y throat, and huge headache. I really, really believe it. I feel so under the weather, it didn't even bother me when I realized I had 1 double stroller, 2 single strollers, 1 baby carrier in its own stroller, and 2 car seats strewn across my living room. I can see a little bit of dried mud tracks as well, and I don't fucking care.

My head felt like it's stuffed with cotton, and I just wanted to be better. You know that feeling. It felt like I'm having a fever but the thermometer lied. Bugger! Nose drips so fast, I could probably fill an 8-ounces cup in less than an hour. Gross. I know. I crawled on top of a folding chair, root around my medicine cabinet, and found my favorite Tylenol colds non-drowsy caplets. I love this meds. And hour after I downed a pair, I felt so much better. I was back to instantly caring about the state of chaos that was my living room.

I brought my baby, DS4, today to his doctor for his 6-month check-up. He’s got some viral infection, so shots will have to be delayed. DS3 also went because we were worried how he’s constantly tripping all over his feet. He’s 27 months, been walking for 18 of those, and I just worried that he still trips. It was nothing, he’ll probably outgrow it.

DS4 totaled 3 changes of exam table liner because he’d sit up, grab a handful, immediately turn the other way, and start all over again. Wow. I totally got my money’s worth in liners today. I am also pretty sure that DS4 dribbled these resident viruses I have now. Nothing for it…both of us will be cranky for a few days. He's over two feet, weights around 18 pounds, and he's on his way to walking on all fours. I am amazed at this guy. He's so cute and I couldn't get enough of him.

Despite medical opinions and years of microbiological stride, I still think that because my husband turned down the A/C to 65 two nights ago is the reason for my colds. I am not telling him that. He finds it hilarious how I could be so smart and intelligent and still hold on to beliefs like this. I would too, if I am not the one in for a long haul of cough and phlegm. Did I also tell you that when I get started on coughing I can’t shake it off for at least 3 weeks?

I can’t really complain too much about flu or other similar viruses. It saved my life six months ago. The long and short of it is as follows. I didn’t know I was well on my way to pre-eclampsia when I caught a horrible bug and went to the doctor to check my non-kicking baby. I was surprised to find out that while I was having high temps; my baby in my tummy was having fever too. I was hooked on monitor and all kinds of gadgets. When the baby’s heartbeat normalized after 2 days, I was almost discharge when someone somewhere noticed my funny liver. I had to deliver that day coz my liver is on the way to conking out on me. Anyway, it’s because of the bug which saved my life. I can’t complain too much.

The good news I will probably lose at least 8 pounds because of this. I’ll have to evaluate later if this time around, this colds and cough combo is good for me or not. Gam Zeh L'Tovah*?

*This too is for the good.

Happy 5th Birthday to my DS2

This is my 5 year old baby. He's very sweet and cuddly. This is my helpful son, the sweet guy who'll help me clean up the mess just because he saw me so frazzled already. All my kids are wonderful, but this guy will make sure we're done with the task before quitting.

This is the baby who kisses us (D and I) the most when he's two. He'll insist on looking into your eyes and kiss the heck out of you in his slobbery baby way. He's got such deep dimples which deepen with each laughter or tears. He's perceptive of me. He's one of the first children who could tell right away if I am getting unhappy or unsettled. He's like my emotional barometer sometimes. He never fails to tell us he loves us. He'll say, "Mommy or Abba, look at me. Look at me. I love you!" And doesn't that just warm your heart?

He loves books. He loves to read it, and he loves to build something with it. He's mostly why you'll see books built like bridges in my living room floor. He's why you'll see my encyclopedia volumes continuously relocated. He loves legos, and trains too. We're discovering a musical aptitude with him that is somehow surprising but not unexpected. He seems to retain visual memory very well.

This child of mine is like a puppy. He likes to tumble and roll with his brothers. He happens to be heavier than the others too, so we have to remind him to be gentle. He loves music. I noticed he's into 80's music, like Dan Hill and other romantic pop singer. Some days, you can see him just sitting down enjoying his music and looking very content.

He's very smart too. He was able to put back together a desktop computer when I unplugged every thing because he's spending too much time with it. At two years old, he was able to put everything back together. I was properly impressed! Lately, he's mastering his alphabets. He knows all the letters of the alphabet and the names of his siblings too.

It's very disconcerting to see DS1's name written with a permanent marker on the carpet on DS2's handwriting. Oy vey! I see alphabets, and pictures and stories on my walls! I know some houses gets away unscathed by their children, but not mine. My walls are like ancient Egyptian walls with our own family hieroglyphs. Our walls are a living testament to my children's communicating abilities. I will take a picture of my walls before re-painting it because these images will bring to mind of times when my kids are mostly babies. Sweet and all too fleeting.

This child of mind can be very stubborn. He won't listen to you if you come on too strong, but soft, firm voice does the trick with him. Some people judged him too quickly and often got it wrong. It breaks my heart that they'll never get to know this wonderful boy simply because they are allergic to his speech delay. He's much better at communicating today. He's less frustrated now that he can explain himself better. We're very proud to have him and we love him very much!

To our darling son, Happy birthday! Abba and Mommy will always love you.

LOVE THURSDAY #5: My daughter is 9 today!

It doesn't seem that long ago when I was all excited when the stick turned blue; or how I grinned a whole 24 hours on hearing that first heartbeats. How D and I have so much fun coming up with names for our baby. We decided to wait until birth to find out our baby's sex. I can still recall the wonder I felt when my stomach moved on it's own to my baby's kick. How this baby had such powerful kick, my tummy would tent up, cone-head shape.

I remember praying that I'd have my labor on a weekend so D could be with me. I was petrified of going to the hospital by myself. Remember what they said about being careful what I wish for? I started my labor on the day we have our first Physical Chemistry exam. Friday morning, the beginning of a weekend! I was in labor the whole weekend and finally gave birth on Sunday around 7PM. My prayers were answered with a vengeance! I didn't care, I had a beautiful baby in the end.

We have so many memorable conversation throughtout the years. but this one is still my favorite when she was 5 and I was pregnant with baby #4.

DD(darling daughter): Excuse me, Mommy, may I talk to you?
Me: Sure.
DD: Are we having a baby girl?
Me: I don't know. I'll find out when this baby is born.
DD: Well, if it's a boy, you'll return it.
Me: Sorry sweetie, this baby's ours.
DD: Oh. Can we give it away?
Me: No. It's our baby, we'll love it.
DD: (eye alight with the brilliance of her idea) I know! We'll exchange it for a girl!

I got a phone call when Yossi was born.

DD: Mommy, don't exchange the baby. I know it's a boy, but I love him already!

She's such a delightful baby. At one point, she looked so much like me, I remember thinking how incredibly lucky I am to have such a daughter. She's the best girl there is. Smart, funny, artistic, loving and all things that are nice. Today, we're going out on a girls-only (except for the baby) day out, because tomorrow, she'll be sharing the limelight with her little brother for a Build-a-bear-Party. We're celebrating a-la-grown up style tonight. Just us girls and a baby!

Ghandi has nothing on my kids

with Sam

My second grader (SG) is so adorable. He's very smart in math. I think he took after my brother. He does math effortlessly. With reading comprehension he works harder on it. He's got an unbelievable aptitude for music, however, his first love will always be cars. He's very creative, we've decided to write down story ideas in his notebook just in case he'd want to write a story someday.

Anyway, I just noticed that he's quite set in his ways too. At bedtime I'd say:

Me: Sweetie, have you finished your homework?
SG: Sure!
Me: What time is it?
He tells me the time.
Me: No, I mean, it's time for bed.
SG: I know. I was just getting ready.

An hour later...

Me: Are we almost in bed?
SG: Oh, I have to brush my teeth, {then he goes and does just that}
I get distracted and forget about this.
Two and a half hours later, I come across the same child in the dining room figuring out what new patterns he can do with legos.

Me: hey, thought you were in bed!
SG: Oh, I am. I just got up to take my medicine.
Me: Have you taken it already?
SG: I am just about to
Me: Do it now.
SG: OK
Then one of the little ones took my attention away from him again, and another half hour passed and I saw him still in the same spot.

Me: I thought you're in bed.
SG: I was just about to give you a hug Mommy!
Me: I love you sweetie! And you'd better be in bed next time I noticed you!

Under the radar is good!

My two year old

is crazy about knock-knock jokes. When we're in the car he says:

knock, knock
a pause, waiting for any takers. If there is none, slightly louder,
knock, knOCK!
if no one said anything, then he yodels in a high pitch tone
KNOCK, K N O C K ! ! !

It's not that we don't play with him, it's because we've just been knocked-knocked the better part of 2 hours in our mall walking. It goes like this:

TYO (my two-year-old): Knock, knock
Us: Who's there?
TYO: Orange
Us: Orange who?
TYO: Orange you going...blubber, blubber.
Us: ha ha ha
TYO: he he he. so funny!

repeat ad infinitum

He even practices at night, before bedtime. How could we not be delighted with his delivery?

    The Joys of Motherhood

is being a wife to a wonderful husband. Anything the kids can come up with which might have driven me insane is just an entertainment because I have a husband who's there for me all the time.

I do not blog about my husband all that much. It's because having his love and support and all things in between is like oxygen, ubiquitous and constant. And just like that basic element, having a first rate supply of it makes me thrive. It's not that he's been taken for granted, (though he might think differently, what with the sexual thingy I have while breastfeeding!). He's just so much part of me, and how often do you read about me except with my unhealthy obsession on weight?

My husband likes to tell a chronicle of us meeting in ‘Nam. How I was a sniper slaughtering his buddies one by one. I was a sharp-shooter*. The Fall of Saigon and liberation…
We met one weekend when I was eighteen, and got married less than 36 hours later. You could say it's a whirlwind romance. It was and it wasn’t!

We’ve been writing for half a year. We were averaging 6 days a week of letters with an average of 3 pages, and approximately 200 voice tapes. More him on the audio as I detest listening to my recorded voice. With that much communication, it's amazing how much of our personality is imprinted on each page.

How I managed to get good grades in my demanding BS Nursing studies and writing handwritten long letters to someone not-quite-my-sweetheart yet is pure luck. That and a younger brain which retains majority of the important information I need for my test despite markedly decreased studying hours. I was writing letters when I should have been studying.

I firmly believe that I wouldn’t have the audacity to ask my questions or firmly stated my world views. How do you ask a person you just met what his ideal wife would be or his views on fidelity? Or asked all other awkward personal information when I haven’t even kissed the gentleman! Rules and suggestions were exchanged. Dislikes and likes pounded smooth, but never set in stone. I do not recall now what we were writing volumes about, but it was exciting, tantalizing, informative, entertaining, and above all, pleasurable.

We’ve establish an unspoken rule with our first letters that we’ve going to treat it like a conversation. Each letter takes an average of 10 days to arrive. We didn’t wait for the reply to arrive before we’d launch another one. It’s the only way we can keep the flow going. There was no electronic communication in 1991. Mails are delivered by canoes! Phone call cost a fortune, so we limit those to once or twice a month. Phone sex was certainly out of the question. As for dirty letters, I wasn’t daring enough to initiate one. He tried, but his intimation and hints went right over my head…

One day, I received the letter that would change the course of my life. It didn’t hurt that the picture with the letter is one hot dude! After all, I said I was smart and young. I didn't say I wasn't capable of being shallow!

I was eighteen and in my second year of college. I met my perfect man. I had a dream of traveling around the world while working as a nurse a la Betty Neels.** I am not a nurse today, and I am living a dream life.

Oh yeah, the joys of motherhood is not just about having fabulous and fantastic children like mine. It’s also about having an extraordinary spouse!

*I hardly knew which end to shoot from on any gun thingy with bullets in it. Yeah, I live in a state where shotguns is as common as sandals in summer, but I've never actually shot one. (Note to self, enroll in a class. That's after reading an intruction about shooting. Which means, a trip to the library first!)

**Betty Neels writes romances about nurses traveling while working and meeting their dream boy, usually a doctor. She writes sweet and innocent love stories. A endangered genre nowadays.

    Too fast...

I think mothers everywhere agree that baby-hood is not here to stay.

At 5 months of age, my baby* grew two teeth, coos, laughs out loud at my jokes, greats everyone he meets with a smile and a giggle, roll into his stomach and back again, and sits up. I am not sure which one I should be more impressed with.

The teeth kind of scares me when I am breastfeeding him. He doesn't bite that often, but does it enough for me to pay attention to those pauses he does when he's eating. Then again, he might just be sharpening his teeth on the only thing available to him. My nipples. Don't get me wrong. We're proud of his sharp teeth. So proud we show it to everyone who look slightly interested in our baby. At one time or another, we have delivered a version of the following:

"This is our last baby. Look at those teeth! He's growing so big!"

He's got the cutest laugh I have heard. Then again, my 7-yr-old son, the Pianist/stuntman, is hard to beat in that department. I regret now that I was not so deligent in recording his baby laughs. I could have posted it and we could vote which one has the cutest laugh. Of course we won't tell them who won. Childhood is hard enough without your parents going batty and comparing you!

But then again, being the last baby, we noticed everything about him. The first time I saw him sitting up, I squealed in delight. I startled him so bad, he fell right on his face. My excitement had caused him to howl his head off. I forgot to only gasp in silence and praise him only when he's got a firm grip of his stance.

All my kids seem to want to walk early. You'll see them toddling around by age 8-9 months. No hands, as they say. I don't exactly remember their age when they sat up. My memories aren't that sharp. If I could go back in time, I'd record all their accomplisments in a notebook so I can flip back and regale my kids of what they did at what age. I noticed that my older kids cannot get enough of hearing about their stories of when they were babies. They'll say "...and then what Mommy..." with that happy expectant look on their faces.

This baby is still exclusively breastfeed. I would like to be able to do this longer, but I can see the writing on the wall. He's getting so attracted to food, he'll grab plates and glasses from any unsuspecting diner. So far, he'd managed to swiped down three plates, and two glasses of water to the floor. I am starting to feel just a little guilty about not introducing him to solid food. It doesn't help that I don't have much confidence that these boobs of mine would keep producing enough milk.

How time flies. I can see how hard this baby tries to make himself move. He practices every chance he gets.

    LOVE THURSDAY #4

This just makes my heart all warm and cuddly! These are my darling sons #1 and #3.

I am SAHM, SAHM I am.

Proud to be Stay-at-Home-Mom...rambling about it, and I am not sure where my points are.

    I don't like hearing,

"So you don't have a job?"
"You're just a stay at home Mom."
"You must not have anything to do all day!" or
"It would drive me crazy to have nothing to do!"

WTF! I don't care most of the time, but other times, it gets me. It's just like having sand in your shoes. It takes a certain amount of it to really start to bother.

I admit I haven't heard many of those lately. I do get dirty looks from time to time when I go out with all 5 of my children. I am not sure how to interpret those looks. On bad days, I take it that it might be jealousy...other times, I have to ignore, I might just be tempted to wipe the smirk of the face holding the expression. Apparently, physical assault is a big no-no here in the states. Lots of lawyers around you know.

My children are well-behaved. They might horse-play a lot at home, just like puppies, but I've been really fortunate that they'd "heel" in public. I get compliments about how well-behaved they are. It just warms this heart of mine.

The biggest challenge of mothering for me is coming up with a variety of food to feed my kids daily. Between McDonalds, Chipotle, Wendys, Boston Market, and other places that make food for us, I have to come up with a healthy dish which they will eat. I know that's an impressive list of fast-foods. I don't use them all that much, only in emergencies. Except that it seems to be emergencies for the last week or so!

Meal planning for me is the hardest part of being a mother for me. I have to make a meatless dish, another one for my very allergic child besides meatballs that is, and then another dish for everyone else. It doesn't seem that hard reading that sentence now. However, standing in the kitchen and doing is a different thing. I have tried making a stew for everyone, but then there's always one person who'll go hungry because the dish didn't match their taste.

I can cook and bake just about anything. That said, some days, I don't want to lift a finger at all. It might be because the baby's cries are triggered with the switching on of the stove.

I am always amazed at mothers who seem to fix dinners effortlessly. Like Bree of Desperate Housewives for example. I'd love to be Bree in the kitchen. No, I don't want her life, just the part about whipping up meals everyday, all the time. I can't even take refuge in pasta. I heard pasta is the easiest dish to whip up. My kids haven't learned that they're supposed to love pasta.

Everything else about being SAHM I love. I like that I could just sit down anytime I want to and put my feet up and read a book... Oy. Wrong chapter.

I love being around my kids a lot. Sometimes, I am not as "around" as I'd like to be when time demands my attention to business. If I work at home, does that still make a SAHM? Or does that make me like any other Mom in the workforce, except that my office is at home, and I never get peace any stretch of time.

How does one define SAHM anyway? If I am putting in at least 30 hours doing business, does that make me a "worker" Mom even if I hadn't step outside my house in days? Or if I work in my pajamas, will I still be called SAHM?

What's in a label anyway? We shouldn't be labeled anything but a human, a mother, a wife. But if we don't use our "pronouns," how are we going to tell which from whom? This post is not about the label. It's all about me just being a tad overwhelmed because I had to work right through homework and dinner time today because of poor planning. I had to work with baby attached to my breast as work cannot wait. I have become excellent at multi-tasking. I am ambidextrous by necessity.

I admit that I have a different picture of SAHM before I was a mother. I've arrived. I am SAHM. I find myself wanting to say, yes, I choose to stay at home with my kids. But I have degree in Biochemistry. I managed a business. I am smart, intelligent, and sexy, too. It's just because saying I am SAHM makes somehow pegs me as dowdy.

    Night out

Some things are just hard to pin down. Others defy description. When it's Monday, and I get to go out on a date with my husband, it's always a good day! My Mama offered to babysit for me, so my husband and I went out for dinner and a movie. I had a hard time coming up with a title for this post.

We went to see HOLLYWOODLAND, not my first choice, but we were late shaking our butts. Adrien Brody is really good as a detective trying to find out if Superman in the form of George Reeves was murdered or not. Ben Affleck played George Reeves. I do not think his character is related to Christopher Reeves. Diane Lane played Affleck's girl in this movie. Could this woman be any more gorgeous? She's hot!

In case you misunderstood me, I usually rate the actors by how they look first of all, then how they act. I was thinking that Adrien Brody looks weird somehow, but he can act. I might go back and rent his other movies. I think this picture better. I googled this picture.

I am not familiar with the real case, but the movie did a good job of presenting its case. I am now convince that....ops. I guess I shouldn't give the whole freaking plot away. What am I, movie reviewer? I just wanted to write about a wonderful evening out.

We took the baby with us because he was awake and cooing. How could I leave behind a cooing baby, even if I wanted to have romantic evening with my husband? We managed somehow. We went to chilis. They have yummy food. And I get to burn some calories trying to hold on to a squigling almost 19 pounds 5 months old child. I am not at all guilty scarfing down the chocolate dessert because I am already using up the calories. Right?

I get to talk to hubby. After all, as much as my baby wants to dominate the conversation, he really has no words to say. That's always a plus. So hubby and I got to talk and hold hands. Then baby got really sleepy, so we went back home and put him to sleep in his crib...then we tip-toed out of there again.

Can't beat that. A dinner (I didn't have to cook/bake/or mix) date and a movie night out in the arms of a gorgeous man.

What Color is your Lucky Underwear?

Oh my word! I have never and will never ever wear my underwear like that. Gad, pull down the waist a little lower please... I am flabbergasted. I don't know whether I should be offended for the fit or the way it's put on. This is guaranteed wedgie. LMAO. Ha ha.

Truth is, I have an underwear like this, and it's comfortable, and it doesn't look like that when I wore it. However, my husband might take great offense if I were to post my bum online like so. I resent the "dramatic" flair bit. I don't think I have that much drama. I do have tons of projects, but are they really projects if you never get around to finishing even a tenth of them?

I do not "flutter", I walk with a purpose, with style, with grace! Hmm, do you think if I wear my lucky purple underwear and buy a lottery ticket, I might hit jackpot?

    Your Lucky Underwear is Purple

Dreamy and idealistic, you envision great things for your life. Your lucky purple underwear can make those dreams come true!

You're a busy little butterfly. You have the most projects, interests, and friends of anyone you know.

You also have a flair for the dramatic. Sometimes too much drama comes in to your life and brings things to a stop.

If you want to focus more, and flutter less, put on your purple underpants. They'll help you get the important things done.

    Thursday Thirteen #1

    Thirteen Things about Shoshana

Thirteen things in my expensive, sister-given purse. My Lil Sis's the best. I didn't even know they sell ladies handbags for more than 20 bucks. Honestly, she gave me this gorgeous camel-brown bag by Michael Kors. Evidently, a name on the button spelled like that ups a hand bag price several tens of dollars. Half the time I am nervous using such an expensive bag, coz, what if I spill something on it! Listed in no particular order.

    1. Crumpled receipts - it's amazing how one shopping expedition turns my dollars into wadded pieces of papers with numbers on it. They're great for writing important notes you can lose later.

    2. Stray M&M, yellow-colored, peanut-flavored. I might just be desperate enough to eat it!

    3. Cell phone - it should have been charging, but at least it in my purse when I have to run out of the house early in the morning. Note to self: set the alarm as this truncated sleep might need it.

    4. Coins. I am not counting them, I'll empty it instead later. Except for quarters of course, those are walking bribes. I should just buy those candies in bulk and carry them. On the other hand, it's not as exciting as dropping your quarter in those candy dispenser, then promptly watch as 4 of the 6 tiny pieces they give you drops to the ground; but they sur would be cheaper.

    5. Pen cap, sans pen. I think my little boys have been touring my bag again. Now I have to guess what's missing in my bag. Or if I am really, really lucky, I'll stumble into it before I needed it. I am very nervous thinking I've been out and about pen-less. Pen is a very important thing to carry.

    6. Chapstick. How can anyone leave their house without it? I found out that it works great as a hand moisturizer. Just crumple it and massage.

    7. A packet of Splenda. Hmm, this one might be from chilis...though I am not quite sure...what with my bag-touring-two-year-old boy.

    8. A teeny-tiny, handy-dandy notebook. For writing down those brilliant ideas I might have. It's not that easy coming up with a Thirteen anything for Thursday. Wait a minute, every single page has been written on with drunken circles! I have no doubt my two years old did this. He can write with both hands and never fail to practice anywhere.

    9. Gift Cards. Yep, I carry as much gift cards as I can handle. In case I have extra time to stop by the stores in my gift card collection. Hasn't happened yet since I turned 32 over a whole year ago...but I am optimistic. Besides, how could I leave behind a Victoria's Secret gift card? I could fit into thong sexy thong undies any day now and I am going to be ready to sprint and grab me some. Not the large size, but those medium-to-small kind.

    10. Baby nail cutter. Enough said. In case it doesn't make sense, remember how sharp those nails are from such cute, cuddly fingernails? Yup! Also, real handy with cutting those pesky rans in clothing.

    11. Keys. It has a picture of my babies in it. In case I remember to brag between making sure the little ones walk in the same direction. Picture scattered duckling crossing the street on this one. I have to herd them all the time. Won't do to end up in evening news explaining how one got away.

    12. Hand sanitizer from Bath & Body lavender flavor scent. Do you know that out of all aroma out there, only lavender works with exterminating any poopy smell from changing a baby's diaper? I hate any kind of smell, so this works great for me. I would buy them by the gallon if they have it. In fact, I think I'll put that on my shopping list. One gallon lavender-scented baby wash.

    13. Black Hype wallet. I used to wonder how anyone could carry less than a check-book size wallet before. Now I know. You just bite the whatever (what's that expression again) and do it. It actually works, I feel like a whole new woman.
