Get Real: Bloggers Without Make-Up

As my natural state is make-up less, it's not that hard to find a picture of me without make-up. In fact, I can count with one hand the times I have used make-up in the last 10 years. I have calculated the time it takes to put on and take off my make-up and decided to use my time elsewhere.

In the morning, putting it on is approximately 30 minutes. For me, it takes that long. Damned pencils seem to want to mark all over the place but where I want it. I have a steady-hand (I would have make an excellent surgeon), but absolutely missing make-up sense.

I was thinking that if it takes me 45 minutes on average to put on make-up, and let's say that I only put it on weekdays, which is still 45 minutes times 5 which is like 225 minutes a week, or 3.75 hours a week. In a year is 52 weeks, so it's 195 hours of make-up time. Over at Adventures in Babywearing Stephanie posted her make-up-less self. So, here's my more flattering make-up-less face. The picture on my header? No make-up either.

As you can see, this is already late in the day. I don't think I have even washed my face that day yet. Some days are so busy, I gotta hit the ground running or my schedule will drag me. I have a little routine. Wake up, do my morning ablutions which had better include my face or it's not going to get done until bedtime.

With 195 hours I save forgoing make-up, I can catch up on my favorite authors, experiment reading books I would never condescend to hold when I was younger like Lincoln and His Generals by T. Harry Williams. I would have missed how nice this book is. This book flows so I forget I am reading history book when I could read instead a romance book. With 195 hours a year, I can spend it holding my children instead because they are growing very fast, and pretty soon, even if I want to, it's going to be hard to carry them in my arms.

I am not saying wearing make-up is bad. I am just lazy about it, and after looking at the numbers, I don't feel so bad passing it up. Some days, I do put on make-up. I am not a complete slob. But it surely is rare indeed.

Photo Hunt #28 - Rare

This is my darling son, (DS3). It was late afternoon, he missed his nap, and this is what happens. Every one of my children have moments like this, but it's so rare, I think I only have one for each. DS4 is too young to have one, but I am sure he'll have one.

Roses are usually not rare. But when you're a serial plant killer gardener like me, a bloom like this is rare indeed. Are you familiar with the phrase, killing with love? I do that to my plants. This flower bloomed only because having six children in my house right now leaves me hardly any time at all to take care of my garden.

Innovative Treatment

The Stone Hawk program has many important features.

They themselves are very insightful because they know what the impact of addiction is. They are trained and understand many perspectives in the dilemma that is addiction. They have innovative drug rehab. Those movie stars should check in here.

Set in the beautiful surroundings, the program has the advantages of medical as well as all aspects of drug addiction treatment, including analysis of each individual circumstance. They also provide important opportunities to discuss the causes of what leads to addiction in the first place.

At Stone Hawk, they do not call their clients, “patients”. They instead refer to them as “students.” This distinction is because the student is there discovering what is required to discharge drug and alcohol addiction, not to be in the mind set of having a “disease” or an “illness”. They learn new skills for living.

They offer top quality care with an option of loans and financial aid for those in need. This post is sponsored by Stone Hawk Program.

Thursday Thirteen #22 - Home Ownership

Things I have discovered about the joy of home ownership. Where a sane person can gets a little whiny.

1. All repairs are yours, and yours alone!

2. Those damned sidings needed paint.

3. This is immediately followed by who the heck thought that siding would make a nice outside wall?

4. I have cedar siding, which means every stinking board is going to cost me upwards of 20 dollars!

5. I have finally hired a contractor, but I think I am in the process of being swindled. I haven't paid all, but still it's too much if I am not getting what I have paid for.

6. I should just have rented forever.

7. Did I mention about painting the outside too? They botched that one up. Still, we think having an fugly paint job is better than no paint job at all!

8. My bedroom closet got flooded, so I had to fix the drainage on the patio next door.

9. It's a $500 job, which I think is a bargain because it includes replacing a few feet of broken pipes, fixing air conditioning unit in one of my apartments, and cleaning gutters in my two house. A real bargain! You can bet I will be using these guys again.

10. The pit of my stomach said, I probably need to kick some butt if I am going to get my sidings, all of it, repaired and painted.

11. Next on the list? Fix the children's sand-pile. It's sand playground season very soon.

12. Get new windows, estimated at 5 grand. Oh, man!

13. Summer is really bad here, so I probably have to update my insulation if I don't want to pay a thousand bucks every month on electricity.

I did warn you that I am going to be whiny.

Know When to Stop

There are a lot of things happening right now around me. It is very draining. I know that it is nice that I have a steady lifestyle, strong relationship and all that. I just wonder how long I can stay strong and stable when I almost never get a chance to replenish me.

I am slow to realize that for anyone to keep their center, and focus, one must take time to invest in them. I am no therapist who knew these things. It's just common sense. I imagine being stable and giving is like a bucket full of water surrounded by a group of thirsty people. This bucket of water is very refreshing, and it's making all these thirsty people feel good. That’s wonderful!

Imagine how long that refreshing water will last if all everyone ever does is take and take and take. One does not have to be a math genius to figure out that it will go dry. Sometimes I feel like that bucket. I need to re-fill and re-fuel so I can continue to be a nurturing person.

It is very easy to overlook this self-nurturing in the business of life, especially in the midst of the adrenalin rush, and the good feelings inside providing all these help. On the other hand, I am reminded that Dr. Spock was not a very good Dad, yet he was every one's Dad. I am sure there are others who excel in their humanitarian work, yet end up making sacrifices of their families.

Yes, I want to be giving, and pillar of stability. I just also need to know when I've reached my limit so that my children is not the future casualty of a stressed-out mother, never-having enough time mother because I'm too busy elsewhere.

I am with Jackie Kennedy when she said
If you bungle raising your children, I don't think whatever else you do matters very much.
I think knowing when to stop is a good place to start having balance in life.

Photo Hunt #27 - Steps

About Theme: Steps Roll

I wish I live near these steps...these would be perfect in sculpting my legs without drying out my milk. This was taken at Gaylord ( I can't get past the name), a lovely convention center/resort nearby.

Missing

DS2 suddenly noticed that Lola (his grandma) is not around.

DS2: Where's my Lola?
Me: Away
DS2: I want to call Lola.

He then went to the phone and picked the receiver.

DS2: Lola? I want to call Lola.

I finally took mercy on him and dialed my mother's number. When she picked up,

DS2: Lola? I want to go to work.

Lola usually leaves when she's about to go to work.

DS2: Lola, where are you?
Lola: I'm working.
DS2: No, Lola. You're in Lolahoma (Oklahoma)

Not Again!

Damages:
$6.00 = Bubble gum flavor mouth rinse
$9.99 = Apple scented shampoo
$5.00 = Orange scented floor cleaner
$7.50 = Pomegranate flavored hand soup
$$ = 1 dozen towels wet and thrown on the floor which I had to wash
$$$$ = washing machine repair

It's very expensive on weekends when my DS2 is bored. Today he was. He doesn't really bother me. He finds his own entertainment. I looked in on him and found him diligently washing a small towel with orange scented floor cleaner. He used the towel to clean the window.

I went to my room and grab a book to relax and read, when I step into the hallway to get something to drink, I almost slipped. DS2 had "cleaned" my floor by washing it first. He just forgot to dry it afterwards. Two more towels to the rescue!

There's a calling for a Backgammon game online, so I played three games. When I went to the kids' bathroom to change some dirty diapers, it was to find an empty bottle of shampoo and bubble gum flavored mouth rinse. DS2 was wiping the sink dry. The bathroom is slippery, but it smelled great!

I didn't feel like cleaning really, but the pile of towels is now piling up. I collected them all for washing. That's when I found out that my washing machine won't work. Dead as a doornail. *sob*

What am I supposed to do with the ever-growing pile of laundry now? I called my trusty Sears home repair. I pay them yearly for things like this. I was told I wasn't recorded anywhere on their file. WTF! It was late in the afternoon and nothing to be done.

We dressed the kids up, go to the mall and walked 5.0 miles today. Two strollers, 5 kids, in another van because I had lost my headlight in a collision when we were shopping for garden stuff. Walking has become a nice family time for us. We can spend time together talk and exercise. We were done after two hours.

We're in the middle of painting outside; I think they're almost done. I hope! I can't really say if I like it off white. I had my heart set on wear-your-sunglasses-white. Evidently, that wasn't so good because of something or the other. The paint from DS3's hair finally came off today. I thought I had to cut short his hair, but we can hold on a little while longer.

In a home with five children, I find that I cannot live without vacuum cleaner, dust pan and broom, towels, washing machine, and books. Cleaning is better left after every one's asleep!

Shoes Etc.

Last Friday, we heard the emergency alarm system blaring a warning. I was so out of touch with news and event; I didn't know what the warning was about. It was for Tornado. My kids were just finishing piano lessons, but I didn't have to worry about their piano teacher. She's safe in minutes from leaving my house. Her next student lives nearby.

It was fortuitous that we're in the middle of repainting outside. All my windows were covered and draped in plastic. My two little children went visiting next door to their Lola's house earlier. When I heard about the Tornado warning, I was concerned that they're not where I can see them. I went to pick them up. By the time we were walking back to my house, hails the sizes of little marbles were raining from the sky. We made it inside sans bruises. There wasn't that many hail because after a few minutes it stopped.

I find it fascinating to see a hail. Raining ice cubes in a not-so-cold weather anymore. I could probably google the information, but that wouldn't be fun. I was thinking that hail is more logical in winter than in spring. In winter, there's actually cold enough weather to make the water freeze. I can still recall the first time I saw hail. It was scary and exciting all at the same time. I imagine it's the same feeling seeing your personal favorite star walking towards you, looking like he's about to axe you.

This afternoon, my daughter and I stepped out of the house. We were going to go to the Mall, but stopped by One Price Shoe Store instead. We had such great time trying on shoes. I think my daughter's shoe interest was awakened today. We left with 5 pairs of shoes between us. I got a pair of sandals for my mother, and three pairs for DD.

At one point, I was afraid she's going to wrestle a petite lady over a pair of sandals. I talked her out of it but only because the sandals came in blue. That's her favorite over any other color right now.

After shoe shopping, we went to Chilis and had a drink over dessert and appetizer. It was only lemonade but we opt to sit in a bar. There were TV screens all over, and we had our attention divided between PGA and kickboxing. I didn't know it was kickboxing. The last boxing I know where the ones with Mohammed Ali, so I was complaining why they were kicking each other. Lucky for us, our very cute, earrings-on-both-ears-server knew about the sport and explains it to me. I would have been embarrassed if I wasn't so occupied trying to figure out what the numbers on Golf score meant.

Photo Hunt #26 - Hobby

I like to crochet. I can listen to a books on tape and crochet at the same time...or while watching TV. This afghan I made for my sister.

I can't recall a time when I didn't love books. My mother bought me tons of books while I was growing up. She wasn't too thrilled when I was obsessed with them, I'd missed meals to finished them between exams and homework. I got my love of books from my Mama.

I took up knitting when I was pregnant with DS4. I learned it from a book. I even joined a dishcloth ring and made three dishcloth. I sent mine to Australia, and I got three from East Texas. It was lots of fun.

Bonding Over Dirt

My kids and I are starting a garden. We had list of things we need, and we have pictures and drawings of what our garden is going to look like. I thought my children would prefer the already grown type of plant. I was wrong. They wanted to grow their garden from scratch.

We bought some garden soil, which we have renamed "poopy" soil because they really stink. I think it's a mixture of compost and horse/cow manure. Last Saturday, we were digging, and hoeing, and putting in some garden borders. Other kids were examining seeds to plant. Even DS4 helped by biting through an envelop of corn seeds.

It was a blistery day, so water run along with snots as we were starting our garden. Here's our picks :
Corn, three kinds
Pumpkin, the giant variety
Cucumber
Poppy
Zinnia, for borders
peas
We have tons more, but I can't remember them now. We went to Home Depot for our garden needs. On one such trip, we got hit by a car. We lost a headlight, crushed our bumpers, misaligned our hood, and shook me so badly, I want to come out of my car swinging.

She's over-speeding by over 20 miles in a neighborhood street, and not paying attention to where she's going. I had my eldest and youngest child with me, and she's fortunate that no one was hurt. I am very protective of my children that way. Damn her cell phone anyway...and she must have hit accelerator instead of brake.

Bygones! She doesn't have insurance, and had the gall to hand the cops a fake insurance card. I didn't have my cell phone with me during the accident, so I couldn't double check.

With such an eventful beginning, we are off to making a memorable garden for the kids.

The Pursuit of Happyness

I have to admit, that movie with Will Smith was great. DH and I went to see it in a dinner theater. It was fun. The screen was not as big as a "real" movie theater like AMC, but the food...oh the food was fantastic!

Tonight we saw another movie while my mother watches our kids. We went to see REIGN OVER ME with Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle. Is it only me, or other people get faces confuse too? I thought for a long time that Don Cheadle was Tim Meadows from SNL. Duh!

It's like all the other times I was thinking that Hollywood tend to make movies which are very similar to each other. Let's see if I can come up with a few and you can agree or disagree.
Deep Impact vs Armageddon
Independence Day vs Mars Attach
Prestige vs Illusionist

Ugh...it's too late to think up of others...but it's like they make something similar but different for every movie.

I am thinking how many people out there goes after happiness and trades all no matter what. I am concerned about this generation of "I". It's like no one else matters as long as "I" am happy. "I" need to be excited, and "I" need to get all I want or "I" am not happy. That's all good, you know.

What is not so good is when you bring little children into this world. Whatever happened to the unstated contract parents sign about protecting our children? Can you hate someone so much; you will actually let your children pay for your happiness? It's hard to swallow. It's very disgusting. It's right along there with parents letting an ex-ped-monster baby-sits their kids. People who do this, how can they live with themselves?

I came across a qoutation a long time ago
One only has freedom to the extent that it does not infringe on someone else's freedom.

Recipe Rally! Desserts

Have you ever had days where you only get through dinner to reach desserts? I do. In fact, when we go out for lunch or dinner at someone's house, I always look forward to dessert because they're almost always fancy. When you're an Orthodox Jew at some point, you know what I mean about really nice dinner on Shabbos.

Here's my next favorite recipe for dessert when I am really lazy, as I am feeling lately. This is one of best "Just beat, melt, stir, and refrigerate...these bars are that simple."

There's Coupons and Then there's Coupons

I enjoy online shopping. Who wouldn't be? I have five children ages 9, 8, 5, almost 3, and 1. Now imagine taking them all to shop at a book store to pick the latest best sellers.

Are you sure you're imagining? Did I mention there are 4 boys? They're adorable and super-energetic too. After all that, do I still have to say why I like shopping online?

I love opening my door to the UPS guys who delivers my books from Amazon.com. They have free shipping for orders over 25 dollars. That's like 4 mass market paperbacks, or even 2 new hardcover releases!

I have stumbled into a coupon site. You too can find tons of coupon codes at about any store. Not just Amazon. I immediately noticed Amazon myself because I am not in denial. I have an addiction to books.

With these many men to shop for clothes for, I have come to like online GAP shopping myself. They have coupons too. There's Target for things cutesey. My daughter loves to get her colorful and thematic bed sheets at Target. I mustn't forget my personal favorite Wal-Mart.

It's like finding out that there's a next best thing after slice bread! I just wish that Home Depot, my children's new Toys R Us have free shipping for top soil aka poopy dirt aka stinky dirt for our new children's garden.

Happy Esther

Not our jeepney picture, but similar. We had more than half-a-dozen at some point. They're almost always elaborately decorated, and some even have fancy horns. I hear one sounding like a woman in the throes of passion.

A long time ago, my mother and all of us kids went out on a Saturday night. We had our driver took us somewhere and it was very late when we came home. Along the way, we picked up a hitch-hiker. It was different then, plus we do have our driver with us and some other "guards."

We weren't Catholic, we've always kept Sabbath on Saturdays. It's not that we are unaware of the tradition that majority of our country celebrates, we just don't pay close attention when these things happen. My mother and little sister were sitting in the front seats.

In an intersection near our home, the guy asked to be let off. As he was going out of our jeepney, he called out "Happy Easter!" to which my sister and mother replied, "Yes?"

Photo Hunt #25 - Clean

Theme: Clean Become a Photo Hunter View Blogroll

DH and I like taking our family to our walk here. See how clean and pleasant this trail is. The two itty-bitty people in the picture are DD and DS1 skating ahead of us. This trail goes around the lake and we can see ducks and occasional geese and lots of birds there.

Real Moms...Teach

I was tagged by Louann.
Here are the rules, put up a post "Real Moms [insert what you do here]", followed by an explanation, a picture, and a "Real Moms. Making ....". Then tag five people.

Real Moms teach. They teach their children that being generous makes you a strong person. Politeness is a virtue, and honesty does not equate with rudeness and selfishness. An adulterous wife confessing to her husband that she wants someone else is not being "honest." The time for honesty would have been way before "anything" happened. This example is not so weird or far off. I have five children. I want them to marry to a person who deserves them. I want for them to marry to someone who will love and respect them like I do.

Real Moms teach their children that being in a relationship with someone who is selfish will not make them happy. A selfish person will always
think of themselves first, last and always. They might "pretend" to care about other people, but it won't last long. A selfish person is like a snake. You can give it your all and cherish the snake, but you will never know when a snake will revert to nature and bite you.

Real Moms teach their children being in love does not mean you have to always agree with the other person. Loving someone means being true to each other, and when the other person is suddenly "not happy" anymore because they have found someone better despite all the caring and the support, then it's not "love" anymore. It's something selfish and perverted and it is time to abandon ship. In fact, leave right away and don't let the other person play head games with you.

Real Moms teach their children that the last thing they must do is marry a fixer-upper. Real Moms will explain to their children. Every one has a chance to be saved, but it's better to leave it to the professionals. Happiness in marriage is not bailing out at the first, second or nth time of "boredom." It's so easy to get confused loving with being sorry with the first bloom of lust.

Real Moms will gift their children with self-esteem, self-awareness, and self-confidence so their children can recognize someone selfish, narcissistic, and screwed-up a mile away and will steer clear. They show who those fixer upper are so they can be aware that some things are better left alone.

Real Moms teach their children that people can make mistakes too. If they are already in a committed relationship, it's better to make a clean break rather than cheat. Cheating is a sign of a weak character and bad judgment.

Real Moms teach their children that Mommy will always love them as they are and willing to hear their side of the story, kiss away the boo-boo.
I am supposed to tag 5 people.
