Thursday Thirteen #22 - Home Ownership

Things I have discovered about the joy of home ownership. Where a sane person can gets a little whiny.

1. All repairs are yours, and yours alone!

2. Those damned sidings needed paint.

3. This is immediately followed by who the heck thought that siding would make a nice outside wall?

4. I have cedar siding, which means every stinking board is going to cost me upwards of 20 dollars!

5. I have finally hired a contractor, but I think I am in the process of being swindled. I haven't paid all, but still it's too much if I am not getting what I have paid for.

6. I should just have rented forever.

7. Did I mention about painting the outside too? They botched that one up. Still, we think having an fugly paint job is better than no paint job at all!

8. My bedroom closet got flooded, so I had to fix the drainage on the patio next door.

9. It's a $500 job, which I think is a bargain because it includes replacing a few feet of broken pipes, fixing air conditioning unit in one of my apartments, and cleaning gutters in my two house. A real bargain! You can bet I will be using these guys again.

10. The pit of my stomach said, I probably need to kick some butt if I am going to get my sidings, all of it, repaired and painted.

11. Next on the list? Fix the children's sand-pile. It's sand playground season very soon.

12. Get new windows, estimated at 5 grand. Oh, man!

13. Summer is really bad here, so I probably have to update my insulation if I don't want to pay a thousand bucks every month on electricity.

I did warn you that I am going to be whiny.

And on a more positive note... you can sing in the shower as loud as you want and nobody will bang on the walls!

Wylie's got the attitude!

Yeah, home ownership can be rough at times. But when you get it all done and you sit down in your own home, it's all worth it.

Happy TT!

Good luck with all the home repairs. We're building a house, and I know it will be a lot of work - but I can't wait!

Welcome to the American Dream!
Just a side note about the sandbox, any cats in the neighborhood??? We used to have to deal with that.

Whine away darling, whine away! I know that feeling, we have the 1 inch Ceder on our house... yeah, that crap is not cheap and hubby said, "oh I can do the windows myself and save us some doe!" Well he did but the first few he just went oh not a biggie I will just replace the whole peice of siding when he cut the windows out (origional 1964 windows!!!! Yeah, we were hot in the summer, cold in the winter! LOL) Thank GOD he went and got a peice after the first two and saw how much it costed!!!!! Lord in heaven is it spendy! Good job on finding the great price, just watch them and make sure they do it right! My mom would hire people and be like "I got a decent/great/whatever price then she wouldn't keep an eye on them- next thing you know she has more probs, she got annoyed with me when we were staying with her a few years ago and I was watching the window guys installing a new window going "hey! WTF are you doing?" LOL I don't trust anyone when it comes to stuff like that, I will stay back and let them do their thing but they KNOW I am there! LOL Me, I have my own personal handyman who is a perfectionist and his best buddy who is a contractor... life is sweet! LMAO If we were closer I would send them over to help you out! LOL

Hugs- T

PS I forgot to say, despite all the whoas... it is still WAY better then renting. The pride and how the house ends up is SO worth it when you can say, 'it is mine! I helped to create that!" (hey, I make the phone calls when the hubby can't get to it! LOL)

i should have known where those 12 blog posts/content i made for contractors/plumbers/sidings/home ownership, etc that i made for a client. they would have given you tips and tips

anyway, positive thing is - it's yours, and when you tire out of it and want a new one, you can just get a good assessor and get a new one.

Hang in there, it will all be worth it when it's done.

We did a massive have to move out for a month renovation last year that was nearly the death of me, but it's lovely now that the hard part is finished.

Anonymous said...

Because I'm not enjoy being a homeowner..I own an apartment..I'm not going to repeat the same mistake on buying an apartment..I want a landed house now.

atleast you have your own house..
haayy..kailan ky kmi magkakaroon ng sariling bahay.

Home ownership is so expensive. This year our wish list includes replacing the furnace, roof (shingles) and back decks (2). Granted, I don't think any of that is actually happening until next year ;(

That said, I wouldn't go back to renting for anything. The repairs may be yours alone, but so are the yard, driveway, heat and water sources, etc.

Tink said...

I'm glad we own our home. You can change everything you want and you're saving for the future too. rents only get higher every year. Having said that... I know what you mean! :-)

Thanks for visiting my TT!

Oh my! Ang gastos din talaga ng pag maintain ng bahay. Pero at least you could be proud to say you have your own home! :D

It is not always fun but when everything is done you will enjoy your own home...and start with repairs all over again! (sorry about that!)
But it's your very own place. It just takes a bit of time to have everything the way you want to have it. Have a wonderful thursday!

My sister just bought her first home (we moved her in last weekend) and she's still in the "it's all mine, hurray" stage. I rent a house and LOVE turning over repairs to the landlord, but I still want to own my own house someday soon.

Happy TT!

♥ Wylie, that is true! Thanks for the bright side of life!

♥ Susan, I agree with you! I forgot to mention that it's also satisfying when a tast is done.

♥ Janet, it's not all that bad. I actually love owning my home.

♥ Carol, how exciting! I would love to build a house from scratch, but most of all, I love where we are because we're happy and getting along well. Just like what a home should be.

♥ Jennymcb, we've been lucky so far. It's an inner courtyard and no cats there yet. I hope they never come, that would spoil it for my darlings!

♥ T, I don't understand why they have to put sidings where bricks are so much prettier! Darn 70s! I have to read more on telling people what to do...that and learn Spanish.

♥ Ev, I don't like the moving so much. have you ever noticed that there's too much stuff when you move? I have moved 3 times, and I am always torn about the stuff I had to leave behind.

♥ Sexy Mom, I wish I have that list. In fact, if you find it, please e-mail it to me, or give me link. I see lots of dealing with contractors in my future. We have more than one house...a blessing I supposed.

♥ Thank you Mousey!

♥ Robin, it's really only bad when there's delayed that's unexpected. I just want it done and over now.

♥ Rennyba, LOL. Too true!

♥ Syh, it's not all pain, trust me! I own an apartment too...don't like the homeowner's fees, they keep climbing up every single year for silly reasons!

♥ Enoc, thanks for the bright side. I must sound so ungrateful huh?

♥ She, I know what you mean. I would love a new kitchen. The price tag is 30 grand. So, kitchen or new van, hmmm.

♥ Tink, good point! Thank you for reminding me. :)

♥ Ferdz, talaga. Mas maganda yong buhay mo Ferdz, travelling around the world!

♥ Mar, I guess the word or attitude I am looking for is "roll with the punches"

♥ Annie, I guess owning a home, you get the good and the bad parts together. :)

♥ SA, how you do fake Mr. Fixit? I must be Mrs. Dial-It. But I take care of stuff in the house. Scarry, I hope I didn't miss anything.

♥ Lori, thank you so much. It's not all that bad.

♥ Frigga, owning a home is fun. I hope you own one soon. :)

♥ Damozel, thank you! I have to remember that.

♥ Spyscribbler, I noticed...I guess it's the fixing weather...Spring.

♥ Sanni..wow! I must send you a price. I hadn't realized that. I have to e-mail you. :) I am so glad DS5 grew into his "Tall and Stately" or I'll have to redo it. LOL.

really difficult to have a house fixed if you do not really know the contractor or at least know its tract record. hope you will enjoy what you have paid for.

It's nice we owned a house than renting an apartment, I am happy you owned one.

Good luck on your house repair, Shoshana. Hope to see the before and after though.

At times it's fun to have your own home, other times it's a pain. The fun part is doing some work yourself...it's gratifying; pain part is when you can't do it yourself and you pay big bucks to have it done. Cedar siding--ouch, ouch...very expensive. Get 3 quotes from 3 different contractors...the lowest doesn't necessary mean it's a good deal though.

Have fun with the house sprucing up.

Norma said...

Oh honey, you're just getting started! I've been a homeowner since 1962. Lived in one for 34 years, and think we rebuilt it.

Anonymous said...

So much more expensive eh?! Oh well, at least it's all yours. It'll be worth it when the siding is done and you can step back and enjoy your very own house :) Good luck!

Anonymous said...

I do agree about getting your own place. Since it is nice to have your own freedom to do things you wanted to do. It might be expensive but its worth it

I really think it will be all worth it :)
